Family:Arecaceae
Local names:नारळ (marathi),नारियल (hindi).
The coconut tree  is a member of plam tree family.The names comes from the old Portuguese and Spanish word ' coco' meaning head or skull,after the tree indentations on the coconut shell that resemble facial features.Coconut is one of the most useful tress in the world ,and also referred as the ' tree of life'. 
Coconut provide us food,fuel,cosmetics,building materials.
The coconut has cultural and religious significance in certain societies especially in India.In India coconut fruit has much value in wedding functions,spirituals.
Coconut plams are normally cultivated in hot and wet tropical climates.
In Maharashtra coconut tree is also called as 'Kalpavruksha'. in marathi.The meaning of kalpavruksha is the tree which provide us everything from food to shelter.The white meat inside the coconut is referred to as the kernel.It is slightly sweet flavor.
Botanically the coconut fruit is a drupe,not a true nut like other fruits.coconut  fruit has three layers 
1)Exocarp
2)Mesocarp
3)Endocarp.

There are several types of coconut fruits.

5)King coconut

Per 100 grams serving with 354 calories.raw coconut meat supplies a high amount of tatal fat 33 grams especially saturated fat (89% of total fat ).,carbohydrates 15 grams,protein 3grams.coconut also containing dietary minerals manganese,copper,iron,phosphorus,selenium and zinc.
Coconut water is also beneficial for all age groups peoples.
Uses of coconut:
* coconut water can be drunk fresh or used in cooking.
*In costal side area coconut is primary base ingredient in all Currie's.fresh or dry coconut meat used in vegetables as well as fish or chicken preparations.
*oil and milk are derived from coconut commonly used in cooking.Coconut oil is used for frying as well as hair oil.&coconut milk is used in sweet dishes.
*The shell of coconut are used for furniture and decorations.In old times the hard shell  of the coconut are used as spoon.
*Coconut is used for water,milk and tasty flakes.
*coconut has also nutritional value in our life.coconut is low in carbohydrates and high in fiber and fat so it may helps stabilize our blood sugar level.
*coconut meat contains phenolic compounds which are Antioxidants that may helps protect cells from oxidative damage.The main phenolic compounds of coconut are 
1)Galic Acid
2)Caffeic Acid
3)Salicylic Acid
4)P-coumaric Acid
