Biological name:Laurus nobilis.
Family:Lauraceae.
Other names:तमालपत्र(marathi),तेजपत्ता (hindi).
Bay leaf  is an aromatic leaf commonly used in cooking as flavoring agent .Bay leaf is common ingredient in indian household's.bay leaf can be used dried whole or as powdered.It is mostly used in indian spice's.
Bay leaves are pungent,sharp and bitter in taste.
There are some types of bay leaf:
*California bay leaf:The leaf of the California tree(umbellularia californica).It has much stronger flavor.
*Indian bay leaf or malabathrum:
(Cinnamomum tamala) differs form laurel leaves which are shorter and light medium green in colour.Indian bay leaves are quite different having a fragrance and taste similar to cinnamon bark.
*Indonesian bay leaf:(salam leaf, syzygium polyanthum)
*west Indian bay leaf:(pimenta racemosa)
*Mexican bay leaf:(Litsea,glaucescens)

The leaves of bay leaf contain 1.3%essential oils consisting of 45%eucalyptol,12% of other terpenes,8-12%of terpinyl acetate,3-4%sesquiterpenes,3% methyleugenol and alpha &beta pipnenes,phellandrene,linalol,geraniol,terpineol.
Bay leaf also containg Eugenol.
Uses of bay leaf:
*Bay leaves are mostly used as flavoring agent in biryani,pulav,meat preparations.
*According to lifehacker,bay leaf helps in relaxing your body,They're effective in dealing with insomnia as they  calm down your brain's functioning.
*Bay leaf are used  for topical acne treatment &also having anti-inflammatory properties can bring down puffiness in the skin without loss of moisture.
*Bay leaf water helpful for hairs.It acts as a very good tonic to hairs which helps to treat Dandruff and also eradicate dandruff built over the scalp.
*Bay leaf reduces serum glucose,total cholesterol,LDL cholesterol &triglycerides and increased HDL cholesterol level.
*Bay leaf also used as Antioxidants.
*In Ayurveda bay leaf used as Anti fungal.
