Biological name:cinnamomum zeylanicum
Family:Lauraceae.
Other names:दालचिनी (marathi), दालचिनी (hindi).
Cinnamom is a spice obtained from inner bark of the cinnamomum plant.cinnamon is mostly used as an Aromatic condiments and flavoring material.Cinnamon bark is light brown to dark reddish brown in colour.The aroma & flavor of cinnamon derive from essential oil Cinnamaldehyde.
Cinnamon trees are evergreen trees characterized by ovel shaped leaves,thick bark and berry fruits.The inner bark and leaves are the primary parts of the plants used.
Species of cinnamon:
1)cinnamomum cassia: (cassia or Chinese cinnamon,the most common commercial type)
2)cinnamomum burmanni: (korintje,podang cassia or Indonesia cinnamon)
3)cinnamomum loureiroi: (saigon cinnamom or Vietnamese cinnamon)
4)cinnamomum verum:( sri lanka cinnamon or cinnamomum zeylanicum)
5)cinnamomum  citrodorum: (Malabar cinnamon)
Cinnamon is botanical name derived from Hebraic and Arabic term amomon.meaning fragrant spice plant.Ancient Egyptians used cinnamon in their embalming process..

Chemical constituents of cinnamon:
Ground cinnamon is composed of around 11%  of water,81%of carbohydrates (including dietary fiber's),4% of protein and 1%of fat.In 100 grams reference value ground cinnamon is a  rich sorce calcium,Iron,and vitamin K.
Cinnamon also containing some essential oils .The pungent taste and scent comes from cinnamaldehyde.
Cinnamon constituents including some 80 Aromatic compounds including eugenol found in the oil from bark and leaves of cinnamon trees.
Uses of cinnamon:
* cinnamon bark is used as spice .It is commonly used in cookery as condiments & flavoring material.It is used in the preparation of chocolates.
*In Ayurveda cinnamon bark is used for the conditions such as digestive,circulation,blood deficiencies,fever,pain killer etc.
*Cinnamon compound is responsible for the powerful effect on health and metabolism.
*Cinnamon bark containing Antioxidants which are protect your body from oxidative damage caused by free radicals polyphenols.
